ACDA organises RSPB Workshop for local school children
Report by Ciara (Wed 07 Dec 2005)
On Monday 19 June the local children of Annalong started a learning adventure with the RSPB ‘Aren’t Birds Wonderful Officer’- Lisa Toner.
The new Tourist/Project Officer- Ciara Tiernan organised a day of wildlife education for two local schools ‘Annalong Primary and St. Mary’s Glassdrumman’. In all over 130 local children were provide with information on local birds especially the ‘Black Guillemot’s’
The RSPB officer started her visit with St. Mary’s Primary School. Lisa was very impressed with the amount the children already knew about the local birds, each child had a story to tell about their own experiences with wild birds. In the afternoon she visited Annalong Primary School, Lisa was equally impressed with the children knowledge of wild birds as each child told Lisa about their favourite bird. The children enjoyed playing the RSPB games which provided them with much information on the local birds.
Lisa told the children about a RSPB project in Bangor where a web camera is being used to view Black Guillemots nesting and she explained that these birds can be found at Annalong Harbour.
In between visits Lisa’s met with Allan Kilgore and Ciara Tiernan where Annalong Community Development Association plans for a Black Guillemot project were discussed. The visit by the RSPB is the first step of the Annalong’s Black Guillemot Project which ‘subject to funding’ will involve both schools, the RSPB and Annalong Community Development Association.
